European Electricity
People face a lot of problems when they travel to Europe from America or any place in the world. It can either be due to the difference in voltage of the power supplied or due to dissimilar type of plug outlets used there. Even if you know about the differences in voltage that exist in Europe, it would not be a good idea to experiment with your appliances because if they get damaged, you will be the one to lose.
While the voltage supplied in America is 110V, in Europe it is 220V. Hence, don't turn on any appliances by connecting them to the power just to see whether they function or not. People have been warned of the differences in voltage due to the increased popularity of the internet these days and also due to solutions being found for each of the problems that a traveler can have with his appliances while traveling through Europe.
You have to understand that power supply in Europe is very expensive. Hence, you will not find a large number of plug outlets in a room like you usually do. Moreover, they are also bigger than the usual plug sockets used elsewhere. By doing a little study, you will realize that the voltage of the power supplied and the type of plug outlets can vary from one region of Europe to another.
Hence, these are the things that you will need to take care of while traveling to Europe.
1) Firstly, find out what region of Europe you will be traveling to. You can then look up on the internet to see that type of plug outlets used there. There are a few plug adapters available which convert your appliances' plugs to be fitted into any type of outlet. Buy one of those. Information about all these can be found on the internet easily.
2) While your stay in Europe, avoid using appliances that consume high amount of energy if possible.
3) Try to find out what type of plug outlets are specifically used in the country you will be traveling to.
4) Make a list of the appliances you will be carrying to Europe and see which of them need power converters to lower the voltage as required.
5) The main thing that you have to do is to find out whether your appliance needs just a plug adapter only or a converter to go with it also. This can be found out by seeing the label on your electrical appliance.
If it indicates the power requirements as 110-240V and 50/60 Hz, then it means that you appliance can work anywhere in the world without problems. In that case, you must just use a plug adapter to plug your appliance into the outlet found in that country.
However, if your appliance label indicates a fixed voltage, then you will require a voltage converter to bring the local voltage to that level. Since frequency varies only between 50-60 Hz, most of the appliances do not have a problem with it.
