Surge Protectors

Surge protectors must be an important component of your travel kit if you are traveling to a new country or to a different region of the country.

These have an important role to play in protecting your equipment for damage. For instance, if the voltage of the power increases beyond a certain limit, the power supply to your appliance is cut off by the surge protector, preventing damage to your appliance.

Surge protectors are designed to operate below a certain upper limit of the voltage. If the voltage exceeds this limit, the fuse in the surge protector breaks, preventing supply of power to the electrical appliance. In regions where the quality of power supplied is very bad, a universal surge suppressor can be used.

It is safer to connect your plug into a surge protector which in turn is connected to the main plug outlet. Surge protectors usually come with 3 or 4 built in plug adapters. This makes it possible for us to connect them into any type of plug universally.

This is where the importance of the grounding pin must be noted. If you plug in your appliance into the main power outlet without a grounding pin, there is a probability of appliance damage due to electrical shock or accidental damage. This could in turn lead to fire hazards also.

Using a surge protector with or without ground pin may not be a big issue, because in case of high voltage fluctuations, they fuse is broken and power supply is halted anyway.

Different types of surge protectors are available. For instance, the 8 outlet surge protector enables us to connect different appliances into it at the same time, provided the overall wattage of all the appliances used is less than the capacity of the surge protector. The AC surge protector sees that the AC input power does not exceed a certain value. This is usually used for individual appliances.

Computer surge protectors see that the power supplied to the computer equipments does not exceed a certain value and prevent damage to the computer components. Portable and laptop surge protectors are available for use with laptops and other portable devices respectively.

Surge protectors must be chosen depending on the number of appliances they can support and also there rating in the market obtained as a result of their performance. The public is the best judge of the surge protection devices.
